Juan Ayuso and his teammates from UAE Team Emirates team tried to crack the strong Jumbo-Visma block last weekend, but were ultimately unable to break through the Dutch formation's defensive line in the two stages won by the escapees. The Catalan, fourth in the rankings, is not giving up yet...
Just like on Sunday, it was mainly Remco Evenepoel who knocked on the door in the opening phase of the stage, which Ayuso also noticed. "I don't think Jumbo-Visma wanted to let Remco go, but that made it a very difficult stage. It was constantly up and down and it was narrow everywhere, so it was a brutal stage," Ayuso pointed out about the stage.
"Everything was still together that way at the foot of the first climb," continued the young Spaniard, who then tried to push Marc Soler and Joao Almeida forward like pawns. "We also tried to put pressure on Jumbo-Visma with a few attacks, which resulted in a nice race. In the end there was a breakaway without classification riders, but we still tried to finish off the day."
"The second week of the Vuelta was an exhausting one," Ayuso reflected after the fifteenth stage of Vuelta a Espana. "We are going well into the third week, in which we continue to try with a lot of motivation. I have not yet seen Jumbo-Visma in any problems, but it's still a while until Madrid and we will keep trying," concludes the white jersey holder.
