It's fair to say that for Team DSM and their star sprinter Sam Welsford, things haven't gone to plan so far at the Baloise Belgium Tour.
After finishing in 16th position on the opening stage, things were even worse for the Australian on stage 2 as he came home in 117th. John Degenkolb recapped a disappointing day for the team afterwards, courtesy of Team DSM's official Twitter account.
"Another extremely hectic, nervous and crazy final. Unfortunately, Sam had first a flat tire in a hard moment and once he was back with the help of the team he got taken out in a corner and crashed," Welsford's lead-out man explains. Due to the high speed it was impossible to chase back. We tried our best to grab a good result in the end but the position we went through the last corner was too far off the front and this killed the chances for a top result."
The stage was eventually won by Fabio Jakobsen ahead of Mathieu van der Poel. "Two disappointing days so far in Belgium so we want to show ourselves in the next days," Degenkolb concludes.
