The first week of racing at the 2023 Vuelta a Espana is in the legs and what a dramatic opening it has been. For Remco Evenepoel there have been crashes, stage wins and time spent in the Red Jersey.
“It's a shame that I had that one bad day, due to the after-effects of my injury," the Belgian, Soudal - Quick-Step leader reflects in a post-stage 9 interview with Eurosport. "But otherwise this first week went well. I am in a good position in the rankings and we are going to the time trial with a good feeling.”
On stage 9, the general classification battle was somewhat nullified by concerns over mud at the finish line that saw times taken with 2.05km to go. “This was a very good day for me,” Evenepoel recapped positively.
“We set the rhythm well and just had to follow,” he concluded. “There was a small attack from Roglič, but I didn't really lose any time there." The stage was one by the breakaway with Lennard Kamna of BORA - hansgrohe taking the stage.
