“It makes me angry — you’re giving it your all, and this guy takes off like nothing”: Egan Bernal admits frustration at Tadej Pogacar’s dominance
Cycling
Egan Bernal has admitted to a mix of admiration and frustration when racing against Tadej Pogacar — the man who has come to define his generation. Speaking to Colombian TV show Despierta Win, the 2019 Tour de France winner said that Pogacar’s dominance often leaves rivals feeling powerless.
“He’s on another level. When you compete against him, many times he makes it seem like you’re bad,” Bernal said. “It makes me angry: you’re giving it your all, and this guy takes off like nothing happened. But it’s cool to compete against him — he pushes the rest of us to want to improve. It’s cool that we get to see the Pogacar era.”

A long road back for Bernal
Bernal’s words carry extra weight given how far he has had to fight his way back. His career was nearly ended by a horrific training crash in early 2022 that left him with multiple fractures and a punctured lung. Now 28, the Colombian enjoyed his strongest campaign in years in 2025 — winning both Colombian national titles, finishing seventh at the Giro d’Italia and taking a stage at the Vuelta a Espana.
“This year, I felt like I started to be myself again; I felt stronger,” he said. “I feel different. I went to the Giro, finished seventh, and I went to the Vuelta aiming for the podium. It didn’t happen, but I still believe that one day I can win again.”
Battling pain long before the crash
Bernal also revealed that his struggles began even before his near-fatal accident. He had been riding through severe back pain caused by a herniated disc as early as 2020 — a problem he says may have already jeopardised his career.
“It’s hard to say, I was dealing with back pain,” Bernal explained. “I had a herniated disc, and I didn’t know whether I’d need surgery or not. We realised it was very serious — it was pinching a nerve, and that was causing the pain. Even so, in 2021 I went to the Giro with that pain and won it.”

“Cool to compete against him”
Bernal and Pogacar have shared the Tour de France peloton before, but they’ve never truly gone head-to-head for the overall. In Pogacar’s first Tour, Bernal was forced to abandon with back pain while defending his 2019 title, and by the time the Slovenian began his era of dominance, Bernal’s career had already been derailed by injury.
For a rider who once stood where Pogacar now reigns, Bernal’s comments are more than admiration — they’re the voice of a champion who knows exactly what it takes to reach the top, and just how superhuman it looks when someone else makes it seem effortless.

Rafionain-Glas08-11-2026 - i did not see it. was the relegation justified or an overly hard decision? and don‘t cross riders deviate from straight lines all the time? bumping into each others when they cut corners, etc … why being more strict with the rules on the finish sprint?Ketterechts08-11-2026

- People see what they want to. I am actually the opposite of your accusation, probably more of a rebel than most of you who don’t get the big picture. The difference is, I don’t go moaning publicly about the consequences of my transgressions, I understand the need for rules and I take my OWN responsibility when deciding to ignore or break them or doing so involuntarily. I will also not hesitate to state my case or argue vehemently when relevant, sometimes it works, sometimes it makes things worse but that’s the price to pay for principles and having character.Jumpyjohn08-11-2026
- That may be but that was unknown to others and nothing says that’s the whole truth. Again, don’t try to misinterpret, it is a call and technically it is correct. Besides, even if there is a valid reason, that does not disqualify the ruling or punishment as far as the rules have been developed. I don’t think they’re as far as in football where for handball there is a distinction (in some ways and specific cases) between intentional or not. And football can be just as harsh and people live with it, eg the offside rule, also judged to within tiny fractions but often wrong or ignored. It’s the nature of every collective organisation and sometimes I wonder if our rebellion against it isn’t seated in the feelings we carry from the injustices we’ve felt personally, like being flashed driving 1km/h too fast when we are explained limits are just a security measure but we are absolutely certain not to have endangered anyone with our transgression. The problem is, nobody has better solutions and no 2 people have the same interpretation of where a limit should be.Jumpyjohn08-11-2026
- Because for you deviated implies the other rider MUST have been made to fall and fail to finish ??? I don’t know if you ride a bike but next time someone carves you up or drives dangerously close, just hold back from those feelings of changing something, reporting or filming or even complaining. Everyone will just say, hey you’re still here undamaged, doesn’t seem like anyone did anything.Jumpyjohn08-11-2026
