When Jumbo-Visma unveiled their official lineup for the upcoming Giro d'Italia late last night, both Tobias Foss and Robert Gesink were notable by their absence, being ruled out through covid.
Taking to his Instagram account, Foss has given his reaction and understandably he is gutted. "Extremely disappointed to miss out on the Giro," says the Norwegian world time-trial champion. "After stage 3 of Romandie, I tested positive for covid. Been trying my best to recover as fast as possible, but this time it hit me hard and still struggling with being sick. Such a big disappointment, but unfortunately nothing I can do about it."
Foss had shown some impressive form at the Tour de Romandie, sitting in third place overall before his untimely departure. In the absence of Foss and teammate Robert Gesink who has also seen his hopes of riding the first Grand Tour of the year ruined by covid, Jumbo-Visma have selected Rohan Dennis and Jos Van Emden in their place.
“We worked hard to make the Giro project a success, but unfortunately it was not to be for me," said Gesink, "It is very disappointing to miss the Giro after I got corona in Romandie. Good luck, gentlemen!”
