"I was super focused on my sprint because I know we don't have a lot of opportunities" - Chiara Consonni takes sprint win on stage 2 of Giro d'Italia Women

For the second day running at the 2024 Giro d'Italia Women, there has been an Italian winner. After Elisa Longo Borghini took the stage win in the opening time-trial, Chiara Consonni has powered to a sprint win on stage 2.

In a frantic finale in Volta Mantovana, Consonni narrowly took the win ahead of world champion Lotte Kopecky and Lidl-Trek's Elisa Balsamo in the sprint for the line. In terms of the general classification, Balsamo's teammate and compatriot, Longo Borghini retains her mere one second overall lead ahead of Grace Brown after stage 2.

"I have no words really today," the 25-year-old Consonni reflected with delight in her post-stage interview afterwards. "The team were super. We let the breakaway go for six minutes which was a little bit careless, but I think they did a really good job."

"The final was hard," she concludes. "But I was super focused on my sprint because I know we don't have a lot of opportunities, but I played as well as possible I think."
