Elisa Longo Borghini takes early lead at 2024 Giro d'Italia Women, winning stage 1 ITT by single second from Grace Brown

The opening stage of the 2024 Giro d'Italia Women saw the peloton take on a 15.7 kilometre time-trial. The winner on the day and as a result, the first Maglia Rosa of the race, was Italy's own, Elisa Longo Borghini.

Among the times of the notable names, Lotte Kopecky clocked 21:02 for her efforts, Juliette Labous 21:06, Antonia Niedermaier 21:25, Ruby Roseman-Gannon 21:28 and Letizia Borghesi 21:31 among others. In the end though, no one can match the time of Lidl-Trek leader Elisa Longo Borghini, with the experienced Italian taking the win by a single second over Grace Brown and 13 seconds from Brown's compatriot, Brodie Chapman.

As mentioned, Longo Borghini, a two-time podium finisher at the women's Giro, now moves into the overall race lead. Can she hold onto it over the course of the next week however? Only time will tell.
