In a stunning display by the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team, Dorian Godon led home teammate Andrea Vendrame in a one-two finish on stage 1 of the 2024 Tour de Romandie, moving into the lead of the general classification in the process.
“The team was fantastic. At a certain point I was afraid the breakaway was coming, then Jaakko Hanninen got in front and did a great job, but I wasn't at my best in this cold," reflected the Frenchman in his post-stage interview. "Ten kilometres from the finish I was in the second group, but Jordan Labrosse and Bruno Armirail brought me back under three kilometres from the finish. Prodhomme gave me the sprint, then at 500m I was right behind Consonni and I started at 200m. I had seen that he was downhill, so I asked the mechanics to fit the 56 and I think it helped in the final."
“The plan was to start with two options because these sprints without great sprinters are sometimes chaotic, but this time everything was quite linear so we managed to do this nice one-two. We couldn't ask for anything better," Godon continues. "Personally I didn't give everything uphill, I didn't think the group would break up. I took a risk, but also thanks to my teammates it went well and so I saved my leg a bit. However, we were more of the sprinters behind, while the climbers remained in front."
With the sprint win, Godon takes the first World Tour win of his career and after a solid performance in the prologue on Tuesday, moves into the overall lead of the general classification. “It's a nice bonus. I really wanted my first WorldTour win, so the jersey is something extra," he concludes. "We hope to be able to enjoy it tomorrow and that there will be beautiful sunshine, like the colour of this shirt."
