“I gained a lot of confidence this week” – Felix Gall takes first GC win of his career in Burgos to land pre-Vuelta a Espana statement

Felix Gall will head towards the 2026 Vuelta a Espana with the first general classification victory of his professional career after sealing overall honours at the Vuelta a Burgos.

The Austrian survived a tense final showdown on Lagunas de Neila on Saturday to finish five seconds clear of Oscar Onley and ten ahead of Giulio Ciccone overall. Giulio Pellizzari took the stage victory, but Gall had already done enough to protect the leader's jersey he claimed with his solo win on Stage 3.

Gall arrived in Burgos directly from an altitude training block and leaves with a stage victory, his first GC title and another major result in a season that has already included second overall at the Giro d'Italia.

“I gained a lot of confidence this week, and now I will have a few easy days at home, and then it already is the Vuelta,” Gall said after securing the overall victory.

Gall had entered Stage 5 with just six seconds over Ciccone and seven over Onley, leaving little room to simply manage his advantage on the steep road to Lagunas de Neila.

Decathlon CMA CGM Team instead took control of the finale. After the final breakaway riders were caught, Leo Bisiaux helped drive the favourites' group before Gall launched repeated attacks inside the final three kilometres.

Only Ciccone and Onley could initially follow when Gall split the group with two kilometres remaining. Pellizzari, Pablo Torres, Enric Mas and Mathys Rondel eventually regained contact before Pellizzari attacked clear for the stage, but Gall still crossed the line ahead of Ciccone and only two seconds behind Onley. “As expected, it was a big fight today again, and it was super hot and also a hard stage,” Gall said. “I'm super happy. It's my first GC win.”

The victory adds another marker to Gall's rapid rise as a stage-race leader. Earlier this season he finished runner-up to Jonas Vingegaard at the Giro d'Italia, repeatedly featuring among the strongest climbers before securing second overall.

That recent three-week performance gives his Burgos form obvious relevance with the Vuelta next. Gall has gone from a Grand Tour podium to an altitude block and straight into the first overall victory of his career.

“I did a really good altitude block, and I came straight here,” Gall explained.

The work translated quickly into results. Gall finished fifth on the first summit test at Pineda de la Sierra before taking control of the race on Stage 3, attacking clear of Onley on the Puerto del Escudo and riding alone to victory at Balneario de Corconte.

He then protected his advantage through Friday's sprint stage before facing Ciccone and Onley again on Lagunas de Neila, where both started close enough to take the race from him. Neither managed it.

Gall leaves Burgos with his first GC victory secured and only a short recovery period ahead before attention turns fully towards the Vuelta a Espana.
