36-year-old Marianne Vos proved she can still more than compete with the very best the women's peloton has to offer on Saturday afternoon as the legendary Dutchwoman added Omloop Het Nieuwsblad WE to her illustrious palmares.
Coming into the finale as part of an elite, four-woman group, Vos was joined by Shirin van Anrooij, Elisa Longo Borghini and the rainbow jersey wearing, Lotte Kopecky. Whilst Kopecky was arguably the favourite to win from this position, Vos was the woman who prevailed in the sprint to the line.
“I couldn't believe it was enough for the win today," reflected a somewhat emotional Vos, who'd been competing at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad for the first time in her career, in her post-race interview. "I'm very, very happy. Winning a race like this… It was my debut, but you want to give everything.”
