Though he is considered to be one of the best GC riders in the world at the moment, Remco Evenepoel has also proven himself to be a very capable rider in the Spring Classics, with back-to-back victories at the last two editions of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. With Tadej Pogačar proving that GC riders can compete in the cobbled Classics at last year’s Ronde van Vlaanderen, could we see Evenepoel racing at De Ronde anytime soon?
On Soudal - Quick-Step’s ‘The Wolfpack Howls’ podcast, Evenepoel’s sports director and nine-time Tour de France stage winner Tom Steels was asked which Flemish Classic he thought the Belgian rider would like to win the most. “The Ronde van Vlaanderen, for sure. He has to try it sometime,” Steels said in his response, “it is unpredictable, but it is a real race. The best riders and teams survive”.
Evenepoel is currently scheduled to ride Itzulia Basque Country at the beginning of April, which starts the day after the Ronde van Vlaanderen, making it very unlikely that we will see him at this year’s race. The Belgian National Champion will be racing the Ardennes Classics though, as he is set to ride the Amstel Gold Race and La Flèche Wallonne ahead of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, where he will be going for his third successive victory at the race.
