A Visma rider has won stage 3 of the Tour of Britain, but this time it was not Olav Kooij, but his young British teammate Matthew Brennan who took home the honours on home soil. Once again, Brennan has confirmed he is one of the most exciting prospects in the sport.
The start of stage 3 began in Milton Keynes. With 15km to go, a breakaway group including Casper Pedersen, Ben Chilton, Mats Wenzel and Robin Froidevaux, were in front with a gap of just 24 seconds ahead of the peloton. Behind them, Axel Huens was the in the middle, 15 seconds behind the break. With 12km to go, the beak split with Pedersen and Froiedevaux going clear in a last ditch attempt to snatch the victory.
At the front of the peloton, Team Visma | Lease a Bike began to use up their resources, with a sprint for Olav Kooij at the forefront of their mind. Then we saw the first flashes of Remco Evenepoel at this year's race, who made a surprising split at the front of the peloton. The Olympic champion's split did not last however, and perhaps the Belgian was simply testing his legs, and the final remains of the breakaway were also caught in the last 10km.
Inside the final kilometre, Visma appeared at the front with Kooij and Matthew Brennan. But this time, it wasn't Kooij who was sprinting, it was Matthew Brennan who was lead out by the race leader and sprinted clear for the victory, victory number 12 of the season for the young star. Three out of three for Visma so far!
