No matter how hard the peloton expected stage 16 to be, it was harder. The 200 kilometer-long stage in the Alps was ridden full-gas from the start and in the final two incredibly hard climbs. The damage was immense, and the overall classification has been completely turned on it's head. Isaac del Toro, Richard Carapaz and Simon Yates are separated by mere seconds after the huge gaps that have been opened.
Primoz Roglic has abandoned the race and hence is not part of the overall classification anymore. Juan Ayuso, previously third, cracked on the penultimate climb and then did not aim to close gaps, and is now 17th in the updated standings. Thymen Arensman also had a bad day and fell to 15th. This means we have plenty changes even in the Top10, where all of a sudden Michael Storer is 7th and Giulio Pellizzari, after 1 day of freedom, jumped directly into 9th in the GC.
Isaac del Toro holds on to the pink jersey by only 26 seconds over Simon Yates and 31 seconds to Richard Carapaz. Derek Gee sits fourth, but is only 1:31 minutes behind, a gap that can be closed with three tough mountain stages remaining. Damiano Caruso, Egan Bernal, Antonio Tiberi and Adam Yates are still in the Top10.

Headline says that del Toro is only seconds ahead of del Toro. Hope he’s able to hold himself off… or catch himself. I’m not sure who to root for.

Looks like UAE's strategy of playing it safe by keeping 2 leaders backfired within one stage. In hindsight, they should have unleashed Del Toro in the previous stages and let him gain time instead of pulling Ayuso and other GC contenders back.

Adam must be happy, for his brother ;-)

Ayuso must have caught the same bacteria as Primoz when they crashed ;-), might retire before the end.

This Giro is turning out far more interesting than any recent GT.
