The Vuelta favourites – but also the bargains
The biggest difference between the Budget Game and the regular Fantasy Vuelta a España game is simple: every million of your fantasy budget matters.
The leading General Classification contenders will naturally be tempting, but loading your team with expensive favourites can quickly leave you short of budget elsewhere.
That's where knowledge of the peloton becomes important.
Which lower-priced climber could finish inside the top 10? Which breakaway specialist could collect points across several stages? Which young rider is ready for a breakthrough? And which seemingly inexpensive selection could still be high in the General Classification after three weeks?

Each team consists of 17 starting riders and five substitutes.

Five substitutes add another layer of strategy
With three weeks of racing ahead, crashes, illness and withdrawals can quickly change the complexion of the Vuelta. That's why your five substitutes can become extremely important.
When one of your starting riders does not start a stage, the first eligible substitute takes his place. The points already scored by the rider who drops out remain in your total, while the substitute starts scoring from the following stage.
If two substitutes have the same difference in value, the rider with the highest value gets priority. If both their value and the difference are identical, the rider positioned highest on your substitute list enters your team.
There is one particularly important rule to remember: a rider who is not on the start list when the game begins will not be replaced.
So make sure you check the final Vuelta start list before the deadline.

- I see it like this: Before this cycling year is over, Pogi can still win the Vuelta, the World Championships (third in a row) and the last Monument-Lombardy (sixth time in a row). I think he will win them all. Next year-2027 he has to win a few more Monuments, especially Paris-Roubaix and the stage race Itzulia Basque Country. And what's most important, he has to win TdF for the sixth time and he will be in a club of his own... the one and the only!!! He needs nothing more...he can retire (he won't, but he could). As far as I'm concerned, he's already the G.O.A.T., regardless of his palmares. - @SLO: I haven't said this so far, but I think he's the greater rider, as well. I am in awe like I've never been of any rider, as an adult. I also know how these things get compared. Fifty years from now, when Merckx's records are 100 years old and only a few really old people remember Pogačar racing, people will look at his palmares. People forget the nuance, they look toward numbers, it's just how it is. Look at how they talk about Bartali, "...his prime years were curtailed by the interruption of World War II. That context demands special care when interpreting his statistics." Yes, in my mind Pogačar is actually outdoing Merckx in many ways, but if his career ends prematurely, he'll get the "what could have been" caveat added when interpreting his statistics. Merckx will remain on top, because of his palmares, which he got when he raced longer at that high a level. It's cycling, winning is what counts in the long run.
