Ethan Vernon takes first win in Israel - Premier Tech colours on opening stage of the Tour des Alpes Maritimes

Ethan Vernon has taken victory on the opening stage of the 2024 Tour des Alpes Maritimes and as such, moves into the overall lead of the race at this early stage.

With just a two-man breakaway around 1:50 clear heading into the final 50km, any hopes of the peloton being denied a bunch finish looked slim to none. With that lead having extended to over two minutes by the 30km to go marker however, the stage looked a lot more open.

Fed up of the waiting for the peloton to complete the catch, Romain Bardet and Romain Gregoire attacked clear with 17km to go an began about chasing the lead duo. Although they didn't manage to complete their efforts, the French's duo's attack had brought back one half of the break, leaving just Andrea Mifsud out ahead.

With 5km to go, Mifsud remained over 20 seconds clear, the 24-year-old Frenchman putting in an incredible effort as a solo leader before finally, with 1.4km to go, he was eventually reeled in.

In the sprint, Israel - Premier Tech's Ethan Vernon secured the win ahead of Sean Flynn and Vincenzo Albanese.
