A traffic incident in the early hours of last Saturday in northern Bogotá has placed Egan Bernal at the center of a controversy. The 2019 Tour de France winner was involved in a side-impact collision between the car he was driving, a Tesla, and a taxi, though for now there are conflicting accounts over who was at fault in the crash.
According to Caracol Radio, the incident occurred around 02:00 on August 22nd in Bogotá’s Zona T. What first appeared to be another routine fender bender escalated after one of the drivers left the scene. That driver was Egan Bernal.
The key question is how the collision occurred and who was responsible. Both vehicles sustained a lateral impact, but the information available so far does not allow a definitive determination of which driver caused the crash.
Caracol Radio reports that the parties involved have given differing versions. For that reason, responsibility cannot yet be assigned to either the Colombian rider or the taxi driver. What the Colombian outlet has confirmed is that Bernal was driving the Tesla involved in the incident.
The situation became more complicated when the rider left the area instead of remaining at the scene. According to the reports, Bernal later took the vehicle to a public car park.

The taxi driver arrived with the police

After the incident, the taxi driver traced the vehicle and reached the location accompanied by police officers. However, the officers informed him they could not intervene because the car was inside private property and they could not enter the premises.
As a result, the dispute was left without an immediate resolution between the two parties. The taxi sustained damage from the collision, although the driver says his main concern is not forcing Bernal to pay for repairs.
According to Caracol Radio, the taxi driver maintains he does not intend to claim the cost of the damage to his vehicle, but expects at least an apology from the Colombian rider.

What really happened with Bernal?

The question of responsibility remains open. Bernal’s decision to leave the scene after the crash is the main source of controversy, but that alone does not establish who caused the impact.
The information indicates both vehicles collided laterally and there are discrepancies about how the incident unfolded. Therefore, it has not been confirmed that Egan Bernal was responsible for the crash.
It is confirmed that the Colombian was behind the wheel of the Tesla and later moved the car to a public car park. The taxi driver went there with the police, but the officers could not access the site as it was private property.
For now, the case remains unresolved as the accounts of those involved do not match. For the taxi driver, beyond repairing his vehicle, the gesture he expects from the Tour de Francia winner is simple: an apology.
