"His participation in the other classics is not jeopardized," say his AG2R Citroen Team in an official press release that revealed van Avermaet's replacement in Italy will be Finnish climber Jaakko Hänninen.

Although van Avermaet hasn't been at his electric best in the early part of the season, failing to even make the top thirty finishers at Omloop het Nieuwsblad, Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne or Strade Bianche, his absence from Milano-Sanremo is sure to be a blow for AG2R.

The French based teams main hopes for Milano-Sanremo glory will now lay longer in the hands of the likes of Oliver Naesen, Benoît Cosnefroy and Andrea Vendrame.
