The fourth stage of the Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta concluded with Silvia Persico’s victory. Team SD Worx rider Demi Vollering narrowly missed the win and finished in second place.
"We were never scared, but in the end, it was pretty tight,” said Vollering. Anna Kiesenhofer put on a solid performance by creating a 10-minute gap in the race. But she was caught in the final kilometer. Nevertheless, it did not stop Vollering from admiring her strength. “It is also just beautiful to see an Olympic champion racing like this. But if you are just under 160 kilometers in front alone, you know it will be tough in the final,” said Vollering.
The tour is scheduled to end with its final stage on Sunday. It will be a tough battle between favorites for GC while other riders will focus on the stage win. "It already were some tough stages, but tomorrow will definitely be an interesting spectacle. There are a number of teams who are keen on a stage win, including us. It's a tough circuit, a sort of criterium with a lot of corners. It will certainly be a tough final stage,” concluded Vollering. She currently holds 3rd position in GC, 2 minutes and 18 seconds behind overall leader Annemiek van Vleuten.
