David Gaudu struggled for consistent form in 2026
Medical checks confirm extended recovery period
Groupama-FDJ announced on Thursday that Gaudu had ended his season several weeks ago after undergoing further examinations to understand the difficulties he had been facing for months.
“As announced in August, David Gaudu underwent a series of additional examinations in order to better understand the difficulties he has been facing for several months,” the team said in a statement. “Carried out at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, these examinations confirmed a significant state of fatigue requiring a prolonged period of recovery.”
The team also pointed to a longer build-up of problems across recent seasons, including injuries, disrupted preparation and recovery phases, and an accumulation of factors that affected Gaudu’s ability to recover. The decision was then taken for him not to race again in 2026.
A year without a real revival
Gaudu’s best result of the season remains 5th at Boucles de l’Aulne in May. At WorldTour level, his strongest performance was 8th on stage 4 of Paris-Nice, while he also finished 9th on the Jebel Hafeet stage at the UAE Tour.
Those isolated results never developed into a wider turnaround. Gaudu was 18th overall at the UAE Tour, 59th at Volta a Catalunya and 57th at Tour de Romandie, while his Paris-Nice top 10 was followed by abandonment the next day.
His summer brought further setbacks. Groupama-FDJ left him out of their Tour de France squad for the second year in a row, and he later abandoned the French National Championships, Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa, Vuelta a Burgos and La Polynormande.

2027 becomes the next test
The Vuelta a Espana had previously offered Gaudu a route back after difficult spells. He finished 6th overall in 2024 and won a stage in 2025, but there was no late-season reset this time.
His 2026 campaign ends without a victory, without a Grand Tour appearance and without a completed race since May. Now the focus shifts to recovery, with Groupama-FDJ hoping the extended break allows one of their most recognisable riders to properly rebuild for 2027.
