Danny van Poppel takes sprint win on opening stage of 2025 Tour de Hongrie

Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's Danny van Poppel has sprinted to the win on the opening stage of the 2025 Tour de Hongrie, moving into the overall race lead as a result.
Four riders attacked early to force their way into the day's breakaway. The peloton was keeping the attackers on a relatively tight leash though. With 40km to go though, and all the categorised climbs for the day done, the break's advantage was still narrowly over the one minute mark. By 20km to go, that lead was still around 50 seconds, meaning all was not lost for the break just yet.
At 10km to go, just Siebe Deweirdt and Matteo Ambrosini remained from the day's break, with the peloton breathing down their necks at around 30 seconds behind. With 6km to go, they too were swallowed up by the bunch. From there, a sprint finish was guaranteed, and in the fight for the line it was Danny van Poppel who powered to the win ahead of Tim Torn Teutenberg and Dylan Groenewegen.

- Agree. Del Toro is going to need a team this week to chase down attacks, if they make him do it alone I will no longer respect UAE. The difference between Kuss and Del Toro is a stark one. No one can attack Del Toro in his own team because he will drop them, that wasn't the case with Sepp. I hope this kid, if he has the ability to win in week three, that he wins it emphatically, rubbing it in Ayuso's face.awp27-05-2025

- UAE cannot do a Vuelta/Visma otherwise they won't win, like Visma did cept UAE won't come out on top... they dearly need to stop playing up Ayuso, Del Toro is clearly a natural and should be supported!

- His reason doesn't make sense. He can just take a break after Giro before a build up to Vuelta. There are a number of months before Vuelta begins and there should be enough time to have a few weeks of rest. If the priority is to be a GT rider, this is another good opportunity to expose himself. Unless, of course, he doesn't like the idea of fighting for GC, then it all makes sense that he wants to avoid riding another GT in a year.KerisVroom26-05-2025
