BORA-hansgrohe rider Danny van Poppel finished fifth in the thirteenth stage of Vuelta a Espana. The Dutchman underestimated the final climb, which cost him a potential stage victory.
"I think many riders underestimated how tough the final would be," Van Poppel said. It was too late to launch an attack, as Pedersen and Ackerman were ahead of him on the final climb.  “ When Ackermann and Pedersen went, I saw that the finish was still far, so I decided to wait. Then they were already too far. I gave everything, but today was not my day," said Van Poppel.
"I lacked the punch I needed to win,” concluded van Poppel. He has already secured a silver in the eleventh stage and currently holds 136th position in GC, 2 hours and 32 minutes behind overall leader Remco Evenepoel.
