Danny van Poppel failed to realize his dream of a stage victory in the final stage of Vuelta a Espana. The BORA - hansgrohe rider couldn’t outsprint Juan Sebastián Molano in the final stage and had to settle for the fifth position.
Things started to go down for the team when Sam Bennet was forced to withdraw from the tour. They continued the race, but there was always a gap left in performance. Eventually, other members of the team tried to fill the space, but no one scored another stage win."We had big ambitions on the sprint stages, and with two wins from Sam, we also fulfilled these goals. But unfortunately, he had to leave the race,” said van Poppel.
Even Poppel hoped to uplift the team’s morale, but the best he could do was one silver and one bronze. He is satisfied with the result and has no qualms about the tour. “I received the chance on the remaining sprint stages. I was close a couple of times, but unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough for a win. Nevertheless, I think I can be satisfied with my performance." concluded van Poppel.
