Chiara Consonni: "I only believed in a group sprint at the top of the last climb"

The Valcar - Travel & Service rider took the win at today's Dwars door Vlaanderen. Chiara Consonni took today what is perhaps the most illustrious win of her career against fierce competition.

“I only believed in a group sprint at the top of the last climb. Trek-Segafredo was very strong on the last cobbled sections. I stayed there in the background and tried to keep following. Eventually I ended up in the first group. In the last straight I knew I had to do my best. I also know that I have a good sprint in my legs, so I'm really happy," Consonni said after the finish.

She resisted the aggressive racing that took place over the bergs to be in a perfect position for the final sprint. After a very consistent classics campaign so far which has seen her finish second at Le Samyn and GP Oetingen, her efforts finally payed off with a win today at Dwars door Vlaanderen.

“In the last kilometers there were a lot of attacks, from Van Dijk and also Canyon-SRAM. They didn't want a sprint. But I knew I had to stay ahead. After that I was able to do my sprint," she concluded.

Consonni will now be eyeing the Tour des Flandres and Scheldeprijs where she'll be targeting once again strong results.
