Arnaud De Lie has just won the queen stage of the
Renewi Tour in the Belgian jersey, and in the cobbles of Geraardsbergen. It was the best way that the
Lotto Dstny rider could've ended the race, even though the team lost the race lead of Alec Segaert.
“Winning here with the Belgian jersey… That’s not a dream, but it is special. The intention was to go for the final victory with Alec. My job there was to work on the Muur, and I felt super good," the youngster said in a post-race interview. "Just before the last time Muur I leave with Tim, and he was also really super strong. That I take my first stage win in a WorldTour race here in the Belgian jersey, that is incredible for me.”
De Lie had to respond twice to attacks from Tim Wellens, and has done so successfully. The UAE Team Emirates rode a brilliant stage to revalidate his title, but De Lie managed to take advantage of his work in the final kilometers to then be the strongest in the final uphill sprint. “Tim was really strong and it was also difficult because of the warm weather. But we were there with the two best of the race at the front. Tim eventually wins the classification and I the stage. I am super happy to win here. Unfortunately Alec does not win the tour, but he comes second. With two more stage wins, that is great for us.”
It was a hot day in Flanders, unlike what the riders are used to having, but the classics specialist thrived in the way that he had dreamed. “I had to woof, like Victor Campenaerts always said. I woofed well. With this warm weather it was very tough, especially on this course. Here around Geraardsbergen the race is always difficult. You sweat all day, that was not ideal, but it was enough and I felt good on the bike itself," he concluded.
