In news that has left many Colombian fans dismayed, it has been confirmed that Nairo Quintana will not participate in the 2023 World Cycling Championships in Glasgow. Despite having expressed his desire to attend the prestigious competition, his dream faded due to problems in the registration process by the Colombian Cycling Federation.
The news was released after the confirmation of Colombia's elite men's road roster for the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow 2023. Carlos Mario Jaramillo, technical director of the Colombian Cycling Team, explained that he tried to convince the International Cycling Union (UCI) to allow Nairo Quintana to be included in the list of riders, but unfortunately, the UCI rejected the request because it was outside the established deadlines.
The problem lies in the fact that the list of riders had to be sent well in advance to the UCI, and Nairo Quintana expressed his desire to participate in the World Championships at a late stage. This meant that his name was not on the pre-registration, leaving any chance of inclusion out of the question.
"He says in the last interview that he is fine and may prepare well. The problem is that the roster was made and then we called the UCI to ask permission, but they no longer authorized because Nairo is not in the pre-registered riders. The UCI requires you to register the list of riders and we registered 14 riders. They require it a month before to get the credential. Among those riders is not Nairo," explained Carlos Mario Jaramillo in an interview with Semana.
The news has been a hard blow for the rider from Cómbita and his close circle, who had hoped that a space would be opened for him to participate in the most important cycling event of the year. However, due to the procedures and deadlines established by the UCI, it was not possible to comply with this request.
With the exclusion of Nairo Quintana from the roster for the 2023 World Cycling Championships, the chances of seeing the outstanding Colombian cyclist competing in Glasgow are closed. Despite his desire to participate, problems in the registration process have left the talented rider out of the competition. Quintana's fans and followers regret this situation, but will undoubtedly continue to support the cyclist from Boyaca in future competitions.
