Some say the individual time trials are the most boring stages of a Grand Tour. The stage 7 fight against the clock at the 2024 Tour de France was a true thriller however, with Remco Evenepoel taking the first stage win of his Tour debut.
Gaining 12 seconds on Tadej Pogacar, 34 on Primoz Roglic and 37 on Jonas Vingegaard, Evenepoel took his first ever Tour de France stage win in style, despite the concern of a late mechanical. In terms of the general classification however, it wasn't quite enough for the Soudal - Quick-Step leader to unseat Pogacar from the overall race lead.
In the fight for the Maillot Jaune, Tadej Pogacar still holds a 33 second lead over Evenepoel, who has strengthened his position as the Slovenian's main challenger. Jonas Vingegaard remains in 3rd, although is now more than a minute down on his arch rival. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader may soon see his podium position under threat from his former teammate too, with Primoz Roglic showing some of his best legs yet this Tour and closing to just 21 seconds behind the reigning Tour champion.
Juan Ayuso had a disappointing day, losing considerable time and dropping from 4th to 5th, keeping his place in the top 5 by just a single second from his teammate, Joao Almeida. Carlos Rodriguez is the only other rider within three minutes of the race leader, with Mikel Landa 3:35, Matteo Jorgenson 4:03 and Aleksandr Vlasov 4:36 completing the top 10.
