The penultimate stage of the Tour de France 2024 was to offer the last day of high mountains, in which the general classification was already decided at the top, with Tadej Pogacar, barring a major surprise, as the winner.

Nevertheless, Pogacar powered to his fifth stage win after Soudal - Quick-Step had accelerated the pace of the peloton so that the breakaway was not far behind. Then, Jonas Vingegaard attacked Remco Evenepoel to certify 2nd place, and the Slovenian took advantage of this to not lose time and dispute the win with the Dane. Vingegaard's goal was at least accomplished, as he goes into the final time trial with 2 minutes and 50 seconds over Evenepoel, who in turn will take 3rd place in the Tour de France with almost 9 minutes over 4th, Joao Almeida.

This is where the disappointment came for Mikel Landa. The Basque wanted to go for 4th overall, but on the final climb he fell apart under the attacks of his leader, Evenepoel, who wanted to take time off Vingegaard, and Jonas himself. In the end, he is 40 seconds behind the Portuguese, who is better in the time trials;

Further down, Carlos Rodriguez, who was again dropped very early, has dropped to 7th overall to Adam Yates, now 6th. The Top 10 is completed by Matteo Jorgenson, 8th, Derek Gee, 9th, and Giulio Ciccone, 10th.
