There will be no Giro di Sicilia on the racing programme for 2024 after race organisers RCS cancelled the Italian stage race due to a lack of funding.
Last year, Alexey Lutsenko secured overall victory at the Giro di Sicilia by 44 seconds from Louis Meintjes, with Vincenzo Albanese completing the podium at 1:07 down on the Kazakh climber. This year though, there will be no return.
"Since 2019, the competition has been financed by funds from outside the region and by European funds,” explains Sicily's Sports and Tourism councilor Elvira Amata in conversation with TGR. “The region tried to raise the money, but the organization could provide few guarantees. That is why RCS prefers a different location for this event.”
As touched upon there, RCS will now look to fill this gap in the calendar with a new stage race. Where? As of yet there is no official confirmation of anything although reports in the Italian media suggest that a stage race in Abruzzo in the period from April 9 to 12 could be on the cards.
