Cyclocross stars really are a different breed and Lars van der Haar is a great example of the sheer brutality and toughness it takes to thrive at the top of the sport. Not for the first time in his career, the Baloise Glowi Lions rider was spotted forcibly popping his shoulder back into joint mid-race during Saturday afternoon's Superprestige Gullegem Cross.
"It took a really long time to get it back in," Van der Haar explained of the gruesome sight afterwards, more disappointed by the fact it ruled him out of race-winning contention than bothered by any potential pain it caused him. "I also crashed, so it really wasn’t my day," he added glumly.
It's not the first time Van der Haar has been spotted using his bike to help pop his shoulder mid-race either. Last season, the Dutchman had a similar incident at Superprestige Niel, sparking similar reactions online from those not so familiar with the toughness of cyclocross riders.
