Mathieu van der Poel crashed in a corner in the Benidorm UCI World Cup race on Sunday afternoon, leaving him with no chance of victory.

The Dutchman, who had won every cyclocross race he had contested so far in the 2023/24 season, could only finish fifth in a race that was taken by his old rival, Wout van Aert.

Despite not winning, there is no doubt that the Alpecin-deceuninck rider is still the clear favourite to retain his title as world champion of the specialty to be held in Tabor on February 4.
