"The podium would be nice anyway, but I'm not thinking about winning" - Michael Vanthourenhout shuns talk of challenging Mathieu van der Poel at World Championships

The 2023/24 cyclocross campaign is nearing its climax and although Mathieu van der Poel is considered the odds on favourite to take another Rainbow Jersey in Tabor, some are suggesting Michael Vanthourenhout as his most realistic challenger.

“It could be like that, but you have to have a very good day. Otherwise it won't work," the European champion responds when posed this possibility by Wielerflits. "I certainly had that good day in Hamme, so hopefully next week too. Then that might be a plan, but I don't know yet what kind of legs I will have. The podium would be nice anyway, but I'm not thinking about winning.”

With Wout van Aert having finished his cyclocross campaign with victory in Benidorm, who will be considered leader of the Belgian team in Tabor? Vanthourenhout, Eli Iserbyt, Thibau Nys can all realistically claim such an honour.

"I think everyone goes there with equal weapons. We have to make sure that we don't race against each other, that will be the biggest point. But I think anyone with ambition can go there. Tábor is a difficult, but fair race. The best three will be on the podium,” Vanthourenhout assesses. "I think I can handle the stress and pressure of such a championship well. We'll see if that's really the case, for the same amount of money I'll fail completely."
