"My dog died on Wednesday. I wanted to win for him" - Marie Schreiber fired by heartache to biggest career victory

Marie Schreiber has held off the challenge of Lucinda Brand and Puck Pieterse to take the biggest victory of her young career at World Cup Hulst this Saturday afternoon.
Always one of the fastest starters in women's cyclocross, Schreiber did not fade away this time, holding her advantage at the head of the race despite a real charge from World Cup leader Brand over the final few laps, becoming the first non-Dutch woman to win a World Cup race since her Team SD Worx - Protime teammate, Blanka Kata Vas back in 2021.

"I have no words for this, I still can't believe it," reflected Schreiber afterwards in disbelief at her own achievements. "I had a good start and suddenly had a huge lead. I expected them to come back, but with 2 laps to go I realised I could win. I was nervous, but I felt really good."
This particular success was made all the more sweeter for Schreiber given some off-bike heartache she suffered recently. "I had a tough week behind me, because my dog died on Wednesday," she explains. "I wanted to win for him. Now I'm overjoyed."

- The main SPOTY award is "decided" by public vote but the BBC "expert panel" decide who you can choose from, that choice has an equal split of genders and is focussed on the sports BBC show and a disabled athlete. Oh yea the ubiquitous "Pub Games" candidate there too, Darts and Snooker are not sports. The other awards are decided by the "Expert Panel" again it's about the sports BBC show, cycling has had it.
