He led the time trial from the first intermediate time check right until the end, holding off a surging Bruno Armirail by just over six seconds as the pair finished a margin above the rest of the field. Maxime Decomble completed the podium in third - 28 seconds down on Roglic.
Speaking after winning the European title on home roads, the Slovenian paid tribute to his nation and the work by organisers to bring the major championships to the country.
Roglic takes in latest success
"It's really beautiful. Of course this success is mine, but it's for everyone here," he said in
his post-race interview. "Not just today, but throughout the whole championship. This success is for everyone who made sure these championships could take place here. This is for all of us."
With an international jersey for the first time in his career, Roglic opened up about his future. Currently, both Lotto-Intermarche and Tudor Pro Cycling seem the most likely destinations for Roglic - with latest reports indicating that Tudor are closer to an agreement.
In his usual manner of interview, the Slovenian didn't give much away. But curiously, seemed to question his 2027 plans as he maintained that no agreement is close, inferring that he could be wearing the jersey in retirement.
Roglic opens up on future
“It’s wonderful—maybe I’ll just wear it at home, since we haven’t reached an agreement yet on what I’ll do next—but either way, I’ll wear it. I could hardly have imagined a better way to end the championship.
“I’d say the opposite [of an update on his future, Ed.]. We’ll see; I hope I don’t just wear this jersey at home, but that we’ll also see it on the bike.”
A European title is certainly not a surprise to many given Roglic's time trial credentials. He won the Tokyo 2020 Olympics time trial and has taken 21 time trial victories during his stellar career.
A clinical and versatile general classification contender, his UCI points haul per season alone makes him an attractive option for teams in the relegation race in the team rankings.
