Italy's
Vittoria Bussi has made history by eclipsing
Ellen van Dijk's
UCI Hour Record and becoming the first woman to hit the 50km mark in the process.
The 36-year-old managed a new record distance of 50.267km in her hour attempt, beating van Dijk's previous record of 49.254km which the Dutchwoman had set back in May of last year, by more than a kilometre.
This isn't actually the first time Bussi has become the hour record holder. The Italian previously set the benchmark back in 2018 when she then managed to total 48.007km on that occasion.
"I'm thrilled to have beaten the UCI Hour Record timed by Tissot for the second time in my career, covering the distance of 50.267 kilometres on the same velodrome where I previously broke it in 2018," she said afterwards. “I owe this to all those who supported me throughout the years, believing in me and my project. This achievement is the result of an outstanding teamwork, and I want to thank everyone who contributed to make it happen."
