VIDEO: Thrilling final kilometre of the 2023 Critérium du Dauphiné as Giulio Ciccone holds on to take stage win

Giulio Ciccone has taken a brilliant win on stage 8 of the 2023 Critérium du Dauphiné, holding off a late charge from overall race winner Jonas Vingegaard on some of the steepest gradients you are ever likely to see.

Heading into the final climb of the day with around a 50-second lead of the group of GC favourites, Ciccone knew he required a big effort to hold on to the stage win. When Jonas Vingegaard attacked, that gap began to fall but the Italian managed to save enough energy for one final push to the line, securing himself a memorable victory with Vingegaard having to settle for second on the day, although the Dane does take the overall race win.
