Stage 2 of the 2024 Renewi Tour saw the riders take on an individual time trial. An early key stage for those with plans of winning the general classification.

One of those riders touted as having potential race winning capabilities is world champion Mathieu van der Poel and whilst the Dutchman's time trial efforts weren't anything spectacular, things were almost absolutely disastrous as Alpecin-Deceuninck superstar narrowly avoided a potential crash with some of his trademark, brilliant bike handling skills.

See the incident for yourself in the video down below!

yeah, he’s probably done that quick foot dab about 10,000 times in his CX career. pure reflex for him. he actually TRIED to do it to stay upright when his rear wheel slid out in the Glasgow Worlds — that’s how the famous broken cleat got broken.

That was like just another day in the park for him

Yes. Definetly his cyclocross reflexes coming into play here. It is pretty common to pull out your foot in corners, wet grass and mud is extremely slippery, whereas asphalt is fairly predictable in comparison!😅
