Tim Wellens will not forget his 32nd birthday anytime soon. The UAE Emirates rider celebrated his birthday in a hospital. Wellens underwent another operation on his collarbone on Wednesday. The operation was successful, but participation in the Tour de France is now highly uncertain.
The Belgian broke his collarbone six weeks ago in a massive crash in the Tour of Flanders. At the end of April, Wellens announced that he could train fully again, but he has now - for unclear reasons - gone under the knife again.
“Thanks for all the birthday wishes. I have never experienced such a special birthday, although it was certainly not the nicest birthday. New operation, same collarbone. Everything went according to plan," Wellens posted on his social media.
It is currently unclear whether Wellens will have to take another short rest and whether his recovery will be delayed. The experienced rider hopes to be part of the UAE Team Emirates' Tour selection in the summer, but according to Het Nieuwsblad, Wellens can now make a cross about his Tour plans.
