Jarno Widar has won stage 6 of the Tour of Guangxi and, as a result, has won the overall classsification. The Lotto-Intermarché rider has ended his season with another major win after being the fastest up the Nongla climb on the queen stage.
The final battle of the Chinese race had the perfect setting for a decisive showdown. The steepest ramps near the finish were set to separate the contenders and force Tom Pidcock to defend his position against attacks from his rivals. The Briton, however, could not withstand Jarno Widar’s offensive, as the Belgian became the day’s leading protagonist.
The finale lived up to expectations for a decisive final stage. As the race headed towards the last climb, attacks came one after another in search of a potentially decisive advantage. Louis Barré was among the first to animate the group, while Peter Øxenberg also tried his luck before the strongest riders were left to contest the finish.
That was when Tom Pidcock decided to take the initiative. The Briton, who started the stage as the clear favourite for the overall win, attacked in the decisive section in an attempt to settle the race in his favour. But Widar had an answer ready.
Jarno Widar strikes when it hurts most
The Lotto-Intermarché rider counterattacked on the steepest ramps and completely changed the outcome of the stage. His acceleration was devastating: he opened the gap he needed over Pidcock and rode on to a victory worth far more than a stage win. At 20, Widar delivered a superb performance under maximum pressure, claiming both the stage and the general classification of the Tour of Guangxi.
Pidcock crossed the finish line in second place, six seconds back, while Barré completed the day’s podium at ten seconds. The Briton was denied the prize he had pursued throughout the race, beaten by a rival who chose the perfect moment to launch his attack.
