The chasers and peloton in chase soon began to reel in the trio out front - who had dropped Fernandez - as the race headed back to Legnano for the finale. With 26 kilometres to go, their gap had fell considerably to under a minute from the chasers.
The flatter terrain soon favoured the breakaway as their gap held steady, holding 25 seconds with 10 kilometres to go and the peloton reeling in the chasers ahead of the finale. With the peloton closing as close as 15 seconds behind in the finale, versatile sprinters such as Kaden Groves, Ben Turner, Dorian Godon, Laurence Pithie and an in-form Michael Matthews all sensed their chance for victory.
Filippo Agostinacchio led EF Education - Easypost's chase for sprint option Luke Lamperti in the final kilometres, and the peloton finally made their catch just over a kilometre from the line, setting up a dramatic bunch sprint.
