It was an open secret for some weeks already, but today the American under-23 structure Hagens Berman Axeon have confirmed the long-awaited news that they will be taking in 18-year old António Morgado.
Having CORSO Sports as an agent, Morgado was expected to follow the footsteps of João Almeida, Ruben Guerreiro, the Oliveira twins and several other Portuguese riders over the last few years. From the same city and team as João Almeida in his junior years, Morgado is following a very similar path, however with international recognition as one of the world's top junior riders and most promising talents.
Morgado has taken a total of 27 wins in total this year, including stage wins, GC wins, national championships. That number doesn't include points and KOM classification victories, which are both at national and international level. Morgado had been linked with the American team for several weeks, and two days after winning the Volta a Portugal Juniores, he confirms his departure from the Portuguese domestic calendar.
"Representing the Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling team will be a great honor as well as a huge responsibility. Despite this, I am excited and motivated to start this new phase of my career," Morgado said in a press release.
