Nico Denz, winner of two Giro d'Italia stages, was named German cyclist of the year on Tuesday. Ricarda Bauernfeind can call herself the best German cyclist of 2023 after having taken a Tour de France stage triumph.
Denz was one of the revelations of the past Giro d'Italia. The strong all-rounder from BORA-hansgrohe normally rides for the team, but turned out to be a reliable finisher during the Italian Grand tour. Denz triumphed in the twelfth stage with the finish in Rivoli and was also the strongest in the stage to Cassano Magnago two days later.
And it didn't stop there, because Denz also won a stage in the Tour of Turkey and also regularly showed up in the Vuelta a España. As icing on the cake, he was also named German cyclist of the year on Tuesday. Denz dealt with Lennard Kämna and Georg Zimmermann, among others.
The women's prize went to Ricarda Bauernfeind. The 23-year-old rider is known as one of the greatest talents in the women's peloton, which she showed this year with a fifth place in the final classification of La Vuelta Femenina. However, Bauernfeind experienced her best moment at the Tour de France Femmes, where she won the fifth stage, with the finish in Albi, after a long solo.
