Mathias Vacek entered today's stage of Volta a Comunitat Valenciana with confidence that he can somehow manage to hang on to his leader's jersey in another difficult stage. However the Lidl-Trek rider was immediately struck with a setback early into the stage when he crashed hard after just a few kilometers of racing. Despite a painful shoulder, the Czech rider tried his best to stick with better climbers in the mountains, but to no avail as he lost almost 5 minutes and dropped all the way to 19th overall.
"I crashed after a few kilometers. I had a lot of pain, but wanted to continue and battle for the jersey. The pain was quite a lot. I couldn't really get out of the saddle and put pressure on my hands. We will see after a check what happens. I gave it my all today, but the crash got me out of my focus," Vacek stated in a brief interview after the stage.
