"An Olympic title, that only happens every four years" - Mathieu van der Poel on his biggest goal for 2024

Mathieu van der Poel has been imperious this winter, with a perfect record of eight wins from eight crosses. If you include the Super 8 Classic victory in his final road race, it's actually nine straight wins in competitive action for the dual-discipline world champion.

In 2024, one thing in particular stands out more than any other for the Alpecin-Deceuninck superstar. "I would still go for an Olympic title," van der Poel says when asked about his targets for the year by Wielerflits. “That only happens once every four years."

The question of which gold medal van der Poel will target is also still up in the air though. Will it be on the road, will it on the mountain bike or will the Dutchman go for both? “That's an even better question. I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to do both or not,” he answers, keeping his cards close to his chest.

“I certainly can't complain, I've been in really good form lately. It is important to keep that up until I leave back to Spain," concludes van der Poel, referring to his dominant cyclocross form. “Every cross has to be held, I try to give the best of myself every week.”
