On stage 19 of the 2024 Vuelta a Espana, Primoz Roglic was a clear cut above the rest of the Red Jersey challengers, soloing to a sensational summit victory atop the Alto de Moncalvillo. Somewhat surprisingly, leading the chase behind was Groupama - FDJ's David Gaudu.
Gaudu has been quietly impressing over the last week or so at the Spanish Grand Tour, slowly but surely working his way up the general classification. Thanks to this latest impressive performance, the Frenchman now sits 5th overall, 4:33 down on the Red Jersey wearing Roglic, but just 2:13 away from the final podium following stage 19.
"Finishing 2nd behind an untouchable Primoz Roglic, that feels good!" Gaudu reflects honestly in his post-stage interview after having chased down and passed Enric Mas in the finale of the stage. "The level is so tight at the back, I know I've got to make up time on my rivals. I've put everything into it, I've drawn quite a long way. La Vuelta 24 has been a great success so far.”
