VIDEO: Mathieu van der Poel enjoys his skiing holidays in Livigno

Mathieu van der Poel has done it. He's become the best cyclocrosser in history with his eighth world title in Hulst this past weekend. At 31 years of age, Van der Poel still has many productive cycling years ahead, and he could potentially aim for a magical '10', or switch his attention to another discipline. As we know, the Dutchman has some unfinished business in mountain bikes...
But right after the record-breaking victory, it was a perfect opportunity to take foot off the gas and enjoy what's left of this winter before Van der Poel's road season begins.
And the Alpecin-Premier Tech star indeed does take some time off to travel to Livigno and switches bike for skies, something Mathieu has been probably looking forward to for a while in the run up to the cyclocross World Championships.
Van der Poel mentioned his short winter getaway even in the Spoza studio after his victory: "After my holiday, I'll be heading back to Spain to prepare for the road season. Will I ride the Omloop Nieuwsblad? I'll decide the week before. If I'm feeling well enough, I'll definitely do that, just like Le Samyn last year. Otherwise, it'll be the Tirreno again." And we already look forward to it!

- My strategy when in the wrong country is follow the live tickers (not unlike written radio* broadcasts in the distant past) on several sites at the time and if the race sounds like it was interesting I search for the replays. Also, if you don’t check the results, a replay is just as exciting as live. - Lets be blunt, this is more more about how every other sport supports the MASSIVE contracts these TV companies hand out to football (soccer) around the world; cycling, rugby, Moto GP and everything else underpins football contract and we suffer. Unlike Italy, our government couldn't care less about it's people and proves it on a daily basis! Brian is spot on, 2027 Grand Depart, something that should bolster cycling in the UK and unless you are at the side of the road or pay for coverage you won't see a pedal turn. - All IMPORTANT EVENTS in Italy remain free thanks to a successful state policy (one of the few positive aspects of inept Italian politicians). And there are affordable private alternatives to watch the rest (except for local football championships, those are expensive, around 30 euros a month).
