After finishing on the podium two times, Leonie Bentveld has become under-23 cyclocross World Champion in Hulst. The Dutch rider put on a bike handling masterclass to thrive in a circuit where the descents played a key role.
The race began with Fleur Moors taking up the race lead anvd very quickly a leading group was formed in the circuit that was marked by the climbs and descents of the many steep banks next to the bodies of water in Hulst.
It quickly became clear that the battle for the medals would be between Moors, who was joined by Viktória Chladonová, Célia Gery and Leonie Bentveld. At the end of the second lap Chladonová began to grow a gap over the rest and only Bentveld would be able to close the gap later on, seemingly showing a technical capacity that was elevating her over her rivals.
This technical ability is exactly what Bentveld used in order to get the best out of the Slovakian, as in the final lap an incredibly downhill attack saw her open up a gap that was then extended by the Dutchwoman who rode into the rainbow jersey. Chladonová rode to second place and the broze medal was taken by Célia Gery.
