"It was difficult to stay focused. That's why I made a lot of mistakes" - Mathieu van der Poel admits complacency crept in at World Cup Gavere

Mathieu van der Poel remains a clear cut above the rest of the world in cyclocross. Keeping up his unstoppable run since making a return to the discipline this winter, the Alpecin-Deceuninck superstar took a dominant solo victory this Boxing Day in Gavere.
Waiting just over two laps before making a brutal attack, Van der Poel was unmatched following his acceleration, despite some impressive performances by the Michael Vanthourenhout and Thibau Nys among others. There was no question about who was the strongest though, as the world champion dominated.
"It was difficult to stay focused. That's why I made a lot of mistakes," admits Van der Poel afterwards. "The course only got harder. The mud got thicker and thicker, at one point it was almost impossible to ride through. I really made a lot of mistakes, so I was happy when I crossed the finish line. Michael was still really putting pressure, so I felt this one.”

- That’s not entirely true. Every person follows their own development path and peaks differently. Remco and Primoz had hardly started cycling before elite level. Jonas was pretty much under the radzr until he unexpectedly had to take over responsibility at JV. Some guys only get real good in their thirties others have peaked mid-twenties. You can’t tell in advance how and upto what level they will progress, obviously his career might not have MVDPs length but nothing says he could not end up doing a few seasons at his level.Mistermaumau25-12-2024
