Lorena Wiebes has taken her first stage win of the 2025
Giro d'Italia Women, avoiding a late mass crash, to win a much reduced sprint on stage 3.
After Nora Jenčušová, the last of the day's breakaway had been caught with 23 kilometres to go, the peloton sped towards what looked like an almost inevitable bunch sprint. Inside the final 10km, it was the teams of CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto,
Team SD Worx - Protime, Team Visma | Lease a Bike and FDJ - SUEZ that were fighting for position at the head of the bunch.
Just outside 2km to go, there was then a big crash near the front of the peloton, leaving only around 10 or 15 riders in the lead group to contest the stage win. From that select and somewhat lucky group of riders, it was then Team SD Worx - Protime's European champion Lorena Wiebes who powered to the victory ahead of
Josie Nelson and
Lotte Kopecky.
