Tour de France hero of the home crowds Kevin Vauquelin is not joining the period that came after the race as much as you would've expected. Instead of well-deserved holidays, the 24-year-old got injured shortly after the Tour and now has a lengthy recovery period ahead. In addition, the Frenchman had to undergo a surgery to treat his injury, Vauquelin's team informs.
"After further examinations, Kevin Vauquelin underwent surgery in Lyon for a lesion of the tibiofibular interosseous membrane," Arkéa-B&B Hotels explained in a brief message via social media.
"His unavailability time will be communicated later," the team added.
Vauquelin was initially set to spearhead French selection for the Kigali World Championships. However, the full recovery is expected to take longer than the 5 weeks that separate us from the race in Rwanda, making Vauquelin's start unlikely. The situation is similar for the European Championships in Ardeche week later where the home team will likely have to make a do without their Tour star.
