Paul Magnier celebrates his stage 1 win at the 2026 Giro d'Italia
Paul Magnier picked up exactly where he left off at the Tour of Slovakia, sprinting to victory on Stage 1 in Košice despite suffering a mechanical problem inside the final eight kilometres.
The Soudal - Quick-Step sprinter launched from the front with around 200 metres remaining and held off Jenthe Biermans, who crossed the line one second later for Cofidis. Sander Granberg completed the podium for Team Drali - Repsol, ahead of Giacomo Villa and Matteo Milan.
Magnier's victory was his fifth career stage win at the Tour of Slovakia, moving him outright ahead of Maros Kovac among active riders and leaving only Vlastimil Ruzicka's seven victories above him on the race's all-time list.

Soudal Quick-Step deliver after demanding opening stage

The 162.6-kilometre opening stage started and finished in Košice and packed 2,572 metres of climbing into a parcours featuring seven categorised ascents.
Erik Fetter emerged as the day's main protagonist from the breakaway, collecting enough climbing points to secure the first KOM jersey. The escape was eventually caught with around 31 kilometres remaining, before further attacks failed to prevent the expected sprint.
Magnier briefly faced trouble when he suffered a mechanical with 7.9 kilometres to go, but was quickly back in contention as the sprint teams began organising themselves.
Cofidis moved three riders to the front inside three kilometres, before Groupama - FDJ United took over with four riders approaching the final kilometre. Neither could stop Magnier, however, as the Frenchman hit the front on the finishing straight and converted his status as the overwhelming pre-stage favourite into another Tour of Slovakia victory. Biermans takes second overall behind Magnier after the opening stage, with Granberg third.
